Behaviour of Timber Joints and Structures under Seismic Loading
Earthquakes in the Groningen area have become severer over the past few years and the Eurocode 8 is as of yet not obligatory in the Netherlands. A practical guideline NPR 9998 and National Annex are being developed and the various aspects which need research have been reviewed.
Ductility is an important part of seismic design, but there is no agreement as to which measure should be used. Furthermore, the point of yielding is a necessary part in the evaluation of ductility and several methods to evaluate this are presented. Another relevant topic for seismic design with timber is overstrength. Its basic definition and measure are discussed as well as its importance for the Eurocode 8.
Perhaps even more important is the hysteretic behaviour of timber under reversed load cycles. Energy dissipation, damping and test procedures are discussed. This behaviour is very relevant when discussing the behaviour factor q, wich takes into account the damping, energy dissipation and ductility of a structure and enables a structural engineer to perform a linear elastic analysis instead of a complicated dynamic or non-linear analysis. Its current implementation in the Eurocode 8 and future National Annex and NPR 9998 is also subject of discussion. Moreover, the analysis methods of the Eurocode 8 are reviewed and a few methods still under development are discussed. Lastly, the subject of graduation is presented.
