The goal of this thesis is to find an answer to the question: How to include fibre direction in the optimization process of a structure and can the fibre direction automatically change within the process due to stresses in the structure. The answer to this question was sought out via a case study where the goal is to find an optimized design for a slow traffic bridge out of biocomposites with flax fibres and bioresins, optimized for minimal use of material due to fibre direction changes.
Within this thesis an algorithm has been developed by which we can optimize a structure and change its material usage in a smart way. The algorithm optimizes the location of isotropic and orthotropic material, the material orientation and the local material thickness.
The end product is a bridge design that has optimized material application with the use of the algorithm.
