Understanding buckling phenomena in multilayered membranes
At Philips, a pressure sensor was designed using a variable capacitor. This capacitor works with two electrodes, of which one is placed in a flexible membrane. The multilayered membrane in the sensor contains initial stresses, due to the deposition process and thermal expansion. These stresses seem to cause buckling of the membranes. To understand how initial stresses cause large deformations in the membranes, finite element models were used. In addition, a method was developed to simplify the layered system with an equivalent homogeneous system.
