3rd Generation Modularization: The Next Step
Modularization in the process industry has been applied for many years in the execution of projects in various industries around the world. While modularization is not new, 3rd Generation Modularization drives the level of offsite construction work to a new level. Where 1st Generation and 2nd Generation Modularization where mainly focused on piping, equipment and steel, 3rd Generation Modularization requires a complete integration of all engineering disciplines on projects.
Although 3rd Generation Modularization is not applicable to all projects, it can lead to significantly less construction time, better quality control and even lower capital cost under certain project conditions, such as remote site locations, shortage of skilled labor and challenging project schedules.
3rd Generation Modularization asks for a new approach to Construction, but also to Engineering and Procurement. Advantages for Construction, Quality and Clients are evident, Engineering disciplines are required to work more concurrent than before and minor changes in one discipline can lead to big changes for others. Procurement has to focus on early release of Purchase Orders in order to provide vendor data to the engineering disciplines at the earliest possible stage.
In conclusion, 3rd Generation Modularization asks for a cultural change from both Contractors as well as Clients. While the advantages are clear, it does require a complete and integrated effort from Engineering, Procurement and Construction to make it a success on a project.
