Courses Master Structural Engineering and Design

Information regarding academic year 2023-2024

The SED curriculum is changing as of September 2023. Changes are only regarding the quartile in which courses are given, but no course content has changed. However, one of the two timeslots of 'Large Span' has been cancelled. The time slots of all courses are yet to be determined by the course scheduler of the built environment.
These changes are made because the old curriculum is disadvantageous for students that start their master studies in February, like pre-master students and students who do not study nominally.

To fill the gap that might occur in Q4, there is the possibility of choosing the 'Practical Assignment Bouwkundewinkel' in this quartile. The responsible teacher can make an SED project that relates to for example timber. Before choosing this, first contact the teacher to make sure that they will proceed with this special project.
To give a clear overview, these are the changes from the old to the new curriculum:

Courses

Structural Engineering and Design is one of four possible tracks within the Architecture, Building and Planning master’s program. The Structural Engineering and Design track focuses on knowledge development through research and application of this knowledge in the design of load-bearing structures for buildings and infrastructure.  This track provides the essential basis to become a structural engineer/designer or researcher, plus the freedom to specify and acquire individually oriented competencies.

You will learn to further develop the knowledge and skills you acquire in practical situations. Each student is assigned a mentor to supervise the elective components of the track and to create a study program tailored to your own interests within Structural Engineering and Design.

The two-year Structural Engineering and Design track includes five core courses, specialization electives, free electives, and a final project. Specialization electives are offered either in the form of lectures or in the form of projects, both related to the Structural Engineering and Design of load-bearing structures. Lectures allow you to acquire knowledge and competences within the field of structural design, while projects can be divided into:

  • Design projects (large span structures as well as high rise buildings), and
  • Research projects (experimental research as well as numerical research).

The overall breakdown of the track is:

  1. Core courses of the Structural Engineering and Design track (25 EC);
  2. Specialization electives of the Structural Engineering and Design track (30 EC);
  3. Free electives from APB or other master’s programs (20 EC);
  4. Graduation project (45 EC).

Students interested in construction technology (CT), building technology (BT) or circular design (CD) can follow the courses that belong to these certificates. To receive the CT or BT certificate, 5 additional EC must be obtained. The full curriculum of the department can be found at the bottom of this page.

Course Evaluations

To maintain and improve the quality of the courses and the graduation project, KOers does evaluations of all SED and CT courses. Both students and teachers can share their experiences with the KOers board members who are responsible for the evaluations. After that, the outcome of the evaluations is discussed with the teacher. In these conversations, the strong aspects of the course are mentioned, as are points that need improvement. The next year the course is given, there will be an evaluation focussed on these points of improvement to see if the course is improved on those aspects. Do you want information about a specific course evaluation? Please email onderwijs@KOersTUe.nl
