Coupled Buckling of Hollow Section Braces and Chords in Optimized Welded Lattice Girders Type
Many of todayâ€™s structures rely on steel lattice girders as bearing structure. Because of the top and bottom chord, combined with diagonals, virtually only normal forces occur in the girder. In order to simplify calculations of the force distribution, the connections between braces and chords are often schematized as hinges, even though most lattice girders have welded connections between brace and chord. The influence of this simplification on the force distribution is negligible. This simplification can however not be applied for buckling of the members. For buckling, the support conditions to a large extent determine the buckling load.
Much research was already conducted in this field; however, the investigated configurations consisted of identical top and bottom chords and identical braces over the full length. Since the internal forces in the braces increase towards the supports, the braces can be optimized towards mid-span. The maximum compression in the chord occurs at mid-span. Loading both brace and chord by a load, close to their buckling load, may cause coupled buckling.
The main objective of this research consists of determining whether coupled buckling of hollow section braces and chords occurs in optimized welded lattice girders.
