Lustrum IX Symposium

Join us at an interactive symposium between engineers, researchers, architects and other stakeholders in a thought-provoking discussion about the future of additive manufacturing within the built environment. The symposium will start with an introduction round where our panel members will tell you everything you need to know about the current Additive Manufacturing (AM) techniques and applications. After the presentations we will go into the discussion rounds.

First we will discuss in 'AM & Society' what and when we want to print, the need for printing and its design freedom, especially since its development is capital- and time intensive. Besides, the technique will be related the to other hot topics of the built environment like circularity.

Secondly in 'AM & Engineering' the discussion will be focussed on how we currently engineer AM structures and how it should be done. We will for example talk about digital optimisation and the role of material safety factors when not everything is known about the novile materials and geometries, while we can sensor everything. To ignite these intriguing discussions our panel of experts consists of none other than:

Rob Wolfs - Assistant professor in the Structural Engineering and Design unit of the TU/e, where he actively participates in the 3D Concrete Printing (3DCP) group and the Robotic Architecture and Structural Design group by, among others, coordinating the course Digital Design and Manufacturing.

Erno Langenberg - Founder of ELstudio, an architectural practice focussing on integrating Architectural Design, Urbanism, and Research by using novel techniques like 3D clay printing for architectural applications.

Marijn Bruurs - SED Talent of the year 2020 and Advisor Digital Construction and 3DCP at structural engineering firm Witteveen+Bos. He was involved in the first large 3DCP structures of the Netherlands, such as the bicycle bridges in Gemert and Nijmegen, and is currently involved in Project Milestone!

Shibo Ren - Associate at the international engineering firm Buro Happold with extensive experience in complex structures in which he applied several digital design and fabrication technologies over the last decade. He was, among others, experienced in AM of structural nodes and was in his Arup time involved as digital lead and engineer for the steel printed MX3D bridge. Next to his experience in practice, he has been involved in several research collaborations with various universities (TU Delft, ETH Zurich, University of Kassel, KIT, TU Munich, etc.).

Willem van Dijk - Director of Building Technology at Heijmans Design and Engineering and lecturer in the Construction Technology certificate at the TU/e. He will provide the discussion panel with extra value due to his long experience in the built environment and expertise in traditional and innovative construction methods.

Kees Leemeijer - Robotic fabrication engineer at 3D concrete printing and development company Vertico. With his extensive experience with in the field application of AM techniques, he will shine a light on its possibilities and challenges from a fabrication and construction perspective. He and Vertico were involved in printing of a wide variety of structures, from public benches and sculptures to a topology optimised bridge, 2 pavilions and a collaboration with ESA and the TU Delft for future printing on the planet Mars! Next to the printing itself, they also focus on development of their own printing technology, releasing their latest Accelerator printhead with corresponding software in 2022.

However, a symposium is nothing without its wonderful hosts and founders of the KOers Podcast Tom Diks and Pieter van Loon! They will ensure the discussion goes fluently and, most importantly, involve our interactive audience of professors, alumni, and, of course, you! So do not be afraid to come by and ask critical questions!

We will end the afternoon with a drink at the Hubble café where you can have informal discussions with the speakers and other students and our partners from the industry about what you thought about the discussions over a drink and bitterballen provided by us.

So join us on Friday 15th of December in the Corona Room in the Luna building of the TU/e (De Lampendriessen 31, 5612 AH Eindhoven) and be part of this intriguing symposium about the future of the built environment!
