ABT Design Challenge
Welcome to the ABT Design Challenge. This year the program will be:

- 15:00 Challenge explanation
- 15:15 Designing and building tensegrity
- 16:45 Judgement of designs
- 17:15 Digital drinks - free drinks included! (delivered at home)

As always the goal of the ABT Design Challenge is to discover structural principles by building and testing in scale. This year it is all about discovering tensegrity. In teams of 2 you will be challenged to build a tensegrity structure. Because we can’t have the challenge in the TU/e workplace everyone will receive a kit at home with all materials that you need to build your design. You will collaborate digitally with another student but everyone will have to build and present a result. So combine your knowledge in the design phase and discuss the winning strategy.
How do you start? Analyze the received materials and make an exciting design! The challenge is about understanding the principle of tensegrity and experiencing building it yourself. How do you connect the tension and pressure elements? How to find the balance that provides stability? The structural engineers of ABT will do short digital visits where they can provide feedback and answer questions.
You have total design freedom what to build, as long as tensegrity principles are used. Using google for inspiration is of course allowed. If you have other tools at home you can use them, be creative, but stick to the same base materials for equal comparison. And last but not least; please always keep safety in mind when constructing!
The winner will be determined by a jury composed of Joris Moen, Eveline Gootzen & Corné Hagen (all ABT). They will take the following points into account:
- The design of the connection details
- The understanding of the tensegrity principles
- Innovation and esthetics are always a plus
- The ability to bear a certain load
The team with the winning design will both receive a nice price by mail (think beer)!
An online drink afterwards is included, with free beverages delivered at home!
